The Rubens at the Palace is a beautifully restored historic hotel situated in the heart of London, overlooking the Royal Mews of Buckingham Palace, through which the Royal family enters the palace. Guests at the hotel will be greeted by red-uniformed doormen upon arrival, which perfectly honours its rich heritage and exceptional British hospitality. Whether you are in the mood for a signature cocktail in one of the hotel’s three bars, traditional Afternoon Tea in the Palace Lounge facing the Royal Mews, or a theatrical dining experience in one of their AA Rosette award-winning restaurants, The Rubens at the Palace is the perfect place for a five-star city break to indulge in all that London has to offer.
The hotel’s Royal history dates back to the 18th century, when the site now occupied by the hotel was part of Buckingham Palace’s grounds and was filled with shops and accommodations for Palace staff. Throughout the next century, a number of unique businesses occupied the building, including a Ham and Tongue dealer firm in the mid-1800s, a dressmaker shop run by Madame Excalier, an artificial flower shop, and the Aerated Bread Company. During the early 1900s, Rubens became a destination for debutantes and guests of the Palace’s Royal functions. Shortly after that, General Sikorski’s Free State Polish Army took over the property and used it as its headquarters, and their plaque remains on the building to this day. The property was then acquired by a hotel group in the mid 1900s, and in continuing its royal legacy, Princess Anne attended the Committee of Methodist Association of Youth Clubs lunch at the hotel in 1970.
