Raemoir has retained its homely charm from its time as a private residence until 1943, has seamlessly embraced the 21st century without losing its personal touch. All activities must be booked at least 30 days prior to arrival.
Raemoir’s history reaches back to 1533 when the grounds upon which the house sits was gifted to a local farming family by a grateful King James V. The first building onsite was the Hall House in 1690, now known as the Ha’ Hoose. This served its 3,500 acre estate and still has the original front door and handle bearing the date with the occupant’s initials, the exterior bell which was used to call the estate workers in and the Coat of Arms. The “new” house was built in 1815 and was extended at various times up until the 1920’s which explains the two different styles of the front facing gables, one Georgian the other Victorian. It was occupied by various private families until 1943 when the indomitable sisters Kit Sabin and Peggy Jordan took it over and initially ran it as a respite home for war wounded officers before opening the hotel. They and subsequent owners entertained many familiar faces, celebrities and royals over the years including many from the London set which reputedly gave rise to Raemoir being known as “the Claridges of the North”. The Rae family continue to serve discerning clientele, providing Raemoir House on a private hire basis.
