Penicuik Estate is a magnificent 7,500-acre Scottish retreat just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, owned and managed by the Clerk family for 12 generations since 1654. The flagship Penicuik House, one of Scotland’s most important Palladian buildings, was originally designed in the 1770s as a stable block featuring a clocktower and dovecot modeled on a Roman temple, then converted into a grand residence after the original mansion burned in 1899. The eclectic interiors overflow with art and antiques collected during centuries of the family’s Grand Tours, creating spaces that are quirky, authentic, and full of character. With 16 en-suite bedrooms sleeping 32 guests, two grand reception rooms, a wood-paneled bar, cinema room, and 1,000m² of private courtyard spaces including Italian dining terraces with pizza ovens and Argentinian grills, Penicuik House serves as the perfect venue for exclusive celebrations. The wider estate offers five beautifully restored cottages with cedar hot tubs and Big Green Egg barbecues, 20km of walking and cycling trails through ancient woodland, and the magical High Pond Reserve waterside venue for larger events up to 250 guests. This is where Scottish heritage, contemporary design, and a 50-year vision for nature restoration converge to create an unforgettable experience.
Twelve Generations of Vision: From Scotland's First Tree Planter to Tomorrow's Regenerative Estate
he story of Penicuik Estate begins in 1654 when John Clerk, an ambitious merchant from Montrose who made his fortune importing silk stockings, medieval manuscripts, and mousetraps from France—along with what may have been Scotland’s first Rembrandt—purchased the Barony of Penicuik to “give over all Trade, and become a Country Gentleman.” Each generation left its mark, but two figures proved especially influential. Sir John Clerk, 2nd Baronet (1676-1755), was a phenomenon of the Scottish Enlightenment: judge, politician, Grand Tourist, antiquarian, and amateur architect who is credited with introducing the Palladian style to Scotland and became the first person in Scotland to improve land by planting trees, personally planting an astonishing 600,000 trees and creating the Designed Landscape now recognized as being of “outstanding value as a work of art.” His son Sir James Clerk, 3rd Baronet, enhanced the estate further by building Old Penicuik House in 1761, one of Scotland’s earliest and finest Palladian mansions, and the magnificent stable block that would become today’s Penicuik House. When fire devastated Old Penicuik House in 1899, the family converted the stable block into their residence, ingeniously incorporating salvaged architecture, creating the striking building that stands today. In 1985, Sir John Clerk, 10th Baronet, established the Penicuik House Preservation Trust to save Old Penicuik House from demolition. Now Ed Clerk, youngest son of the current baronet and 12th generation, has left his career in property fund management to steer Penicuik into its next chapter: a regenerative estate with a 50-year vision connecting people to nature while protecting cultural heritage—continuing the family tradition of planting over 3 million trees across the centuries.

The estate provides an exceptional venue for corporate retreats and away days, featuring multiple reception rooms including a wood-paneled bar, cinema room, and Italian courtyard with pizza ovens and Argentinian grills, all just 30 minutes from Edinburgh yet feeling a world away. With 20km of trails for team activities, a natural spa with hot tubs, sauna and cold plunge, plus curated experiences including foraging, whisky tasting, and astrology tours, Penicuik Estate offers the perfect blend of productive meeting spaces, adventurous team-building, and luxurious relaxation.

Perfect for multi-generational gatherings, Penicuik Estate accommodates up to 48 guests across Penicuik House and five beautifully designed cottages, each featuring state-of-the-art kitchens, wood burners, Big Green Egg barbecues, and private cedar hot tubs for ultimate comfort. Families can explore 7,500 acres of ancient woodland and designed landscape, spot Highland cattle and sheep, enjoy the cinema room and games, or venture to nearby Edinburgh, Pentland Hills, and championship golf courses for an unforgettable Scottish holiday.

Penicuik Estate offers an unparalleled wedding setting in one of Scotland's finest designed landscapes, with Penicuik House sleeping 32 overnight guests across 16 luxurious en-suite bedrooms and two grand reception rooms each seating 48 for ceremonies and dining. For larger celebrations, the magical High Pond Reserve provides an exclusive waterside venue surrounded by ancient woodland where couples can host up to 250 guests in Sperry tents, with the atmospheric ruins of Old Penicuik House creating a spectacular backdrop for evening celebrations and fireworks under the stars.
