In the picturesque town of Stranraer, in South West Scotland, lies the North West Castle Hotel. An exceptionally unique property, The Castle was once the residence of Sir John Ross, a famous Arctic explorer and rear admiral. Lying on the shores of Loch Ryan and with its close proximity to the beach and many golf courses, the North West Castle Hotel serves as an ideal base for exploring the scenic area of Dumfries and Galloway. The hotel is also only a short drive away from the coastal village of Portpatrick, which is the gateway to the famous Southern Upland Way trekking routes, as well as being close to Stranraer Harbour, which is the main ferry port between Scotland and Ireland.
In 1820, Sir John Ross built and developed the original house after returning from the first of several Arctic expeditions to determine the Northwest Passage, and was one of the key individuals behind the discovery of the ice bound trading route, now known as the ‘North West Passage’. For guests at the Castle, Ross commissioned a life-size model of the cabin on his ship, the Victory, so that details of polar navigation could be demonstrated. The cabin structure still serves as part of the hotel bar today.
At North West Castle, the team understand that your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life. Everything and every moment has to be perfect from the table linen, to the flowers, to the food and the evening entertainment.
Situated on the banks of the shore of Loch Ryan, North West Castle is an excellent choice of venue for holding a successful meeting or residential conference.
North West Castle Hotel offers an excellent central base from which to enjoy Stay & Play golf packages across the many superb local courses.
The chefs throughout the North West Castle restaurants and dining areas proudly use only the best local and Scottish range of produce. This allows them to create all of the fresh and modern British cuisine menus in both of the hotel’s restaurants. These are naturally complemented by the extensive wine and drinks list that are available for all guests and visitors.
The hotel’s very own indoor curling rink with superb viewing from the Alpine Bar and Grill is well known all over the world and regularly hosts national and international competitions as well as leisure curling weekends throughout the winter curling season. Beginners to the Roarin’ Game are welcome and breaks with curling lessons included are available
