Home to the Lake Poets
The young William Wordsworth attended the nearby Hawkshead Grammar School, which the family founded and still runs.
Other well-known romantic writers, such as Coleridge and Robert Southey, lived near the lakes and found inspiration when strolling around Graythwaite’s shores and fells.
Beatrix Potter lived in the Lake District later in life after spending her early years on vacation there. She called the estate “theatrical” and brought her character Jeremy Fisher, the gentleman frog, to live in Esthwaite Hall.
Beatrix’s first home in the Lake District, Hill Top, is being maintained by the National Trust and is accessible to the public on a seasonal basis.
