With a long, rich history, Grantley Hall has hosted many distinguished guests such as Parliament members, artists, entertainers, and royalty. Thomas Norton, father of the first Lord Grantley, who served as Solicitor General for England and knighted in 1762, and Speaker of Parliament, originally built Grantley Hall as a private home in the late 17th century. In 1782, he was elevated to the peerage and named 1st Lord Grantley, Baron Grantley of Markenfield, despite not always being popular.
