About Dalmunzie Castle

Dalmunzie Castle is a magnificent turreted Scots Baronial style Laird’s mansion, set in a 6500-acre estate in the heart of Glenshee, dating back to 1510. Dalmunzie lies at the end of a quiet and secluded glen, surrounded by serene mountains and rivers. After visiting Glenshee in 1840, Queen Victoria recorded her fondness for the region in her diary by describing Glenshee as ‘so calm and so solitary.. all seemed to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and it’s sad turmoil’s”. With Dalmunzie Castle’s beautiful gardens and mountain view golf course, the same peace and serenity can certainly be found at the hotel today. In this picturesque Scottish hideaway, each of Dalmunzie’s bedrooms are unique, rich in history, and designed to reflect the original purpose of Dalmunzie as a peaceful haven for the Laird and his family.

Our history

Scottish myth and tradition

Dalmunzie has seen many historic events over the course of thousands of years, although the written history of Dalmunzie begins in 1510 when Sir William Scott granted lands, including Dalmunzie, to John Fergusson of Dunfallandy. A rebellion was declared between 1584 and 1589 against Robert MacRitchie, the first recorded laird, along with his son Duncan, who both resided in the original Dalmunzie Castle. People first started settling in the area during the Bronze age, as evidenced by the standing stone and burial cairn near Glenshee parish church which still stands today. This area is rich with historical tales, including Diarmid’s death and his tomb, the battle of the Caterans, Cam Ruadh’s tale, The Mighty MacCombie Mor and the Dalmunzie sword’s discovery.
