About Chateau de Montastruc

Nestled on an imposing rock formation, the Château de Montastruc is a magnificent residence that seamlessly blends grandeur with simplicity, history with modernity, and character with serenity. Evolving from an ancient troglodytic site to a formidable fortress over its 1500-year history, this splendid estate in Perigord now stands as a spacious and luxurious family Country-House, exuding warmth and tranquility. Ideally situated in close proximity to the renowned tourist attractions of Dordogne, the Château de Montastruc offers a welcoming sanctuary amid the beauty of the region.

1500 Years of History

From Noble Origins to Modern Charm

Chateau de Montastruc bears witness to human habitation dating back to prehistory and the Roman Empire. The château saw tumultuous times during the High Middle Ages, surviving invasions and annexations. The rise and fall of the D’Abzac family brought fortifications and strife, with periods of siege and rebellion playing out within its walls. In 1940, Her Royal Highness Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg resided with her family at Montastruc. During this time, she was joined by her sister-in-law, Zita of Bourbon-Parma, the last Empress of Austria. Zita, wife of Charles I—the final ruler of the Austro-Hungarian Empire—held the titles of Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary, among others. In recognition of her devout faith and service, she was later declared a Servant of God by Pope Benedict XVI.
