The history of Chateau Challain traces back to 1050, although the original structure was destroyed during various wars. The current château was constructed in the mid-19th century by Louise-Ida de La Potherie, the daughter of a renowned colonel who fought in the Spanish Wars and opposed revolutionary forces. Tragically, her only brother died in a duel, leaving her to carry on the family legacy.

The château replaced a 12th-century medieval fortress and was designed with the help of famed architect Louis Visconti, who also worked on the Louvre.
