Originally known as Cally House, Cally Palace Hotel is an 18th-century country mansion set in 150 acres of stunning grounds in the historic country town of Dumfries and Galloway. James Murray of Broughton, a well known Scottish MP, acquired the land 1751 from his grandfather, 5th Earl of Galloway and of the 9th Earl of Eglinton. When James was travelling in Europe during the mid-1750s, he met a young Scottish architect called Robert Milne, who also famously designed London’s Blackfriars Bridge. Together, they built Cally House, which was completed in 1763. There is significant architectural value to the former residence turned golf hotel, which is listed as a category A building, as well as its grounds being listed.
