Our history

Mary, Queen of Scots

Built in 1430 by the esteemed Nobleman Sir William de Borthwick, the Castle stands as an imposing stronghold featuring a grand double tower encircled by a fortified wall, revered for its harmonious proportions and the expert craftsmanship of its masonry. Witnessing a storied 600-year legacy that originates from its founder, Sir William de Borthwick, the Castle has played witness to significant events in Scotland’s history. Strategically positioned atop the ‘Mote of Lochwart’ in a well-tended valley, it commands a crucial position to watch over the southern road to the Borders from Edinburgh. The interior of Borthwick Castle has remained relatively unchanged structurally throughout the centuries. The impressive Great Hall, located on the first floor, stretches 40 feet in length, featuring an elevated music gallery and a soaring roof. Adorned with vibrant paintings and intricate motifs in the past, inscriptions such as “ye tempil of honour” and rooms including a small chamber believed to have been occupied by the renowned resident Mary, Queen of Scots, enrich the historical ambiance within its walls.
