From Priory Gatehouse to Devonshire Estate
The Hall was originally built in c.1325 as the gatehouse of the Augustinian priory, and was converted into a shooting house after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1536. The estate came into the family’s ownership in 1758 after the death of Lady Charlotte Boyle, who married the 4th Duke of Devonshire. The Hall has been altered and enlarged over the centuries, substantially in the 1840s by the 6th Duke of Devonshire and Sir Joseph Paxton, who designed the gardens at Chatsworth, and later, Crystal Palace in London.
The Hall at Bolton Abbey provides a spectacular backdrop for weddings. Intimate weddings can be held in The Hall itself, while larger events can be accommodated in the grounds.
