Our history

"One of the four Whig power houses of Norfolk"'

Wolterton Hall, built by Horatio Walpole, brother of Sir Robert, the first British Prime Minister, is a remarkable Palladian-style house in Norfolk. Inspired by Andrea Palladio, architect Thomas Ripley crafted this grand estate with originality and style. The Walpoles, established gentry in Norfolk since the 14th century, chose Wolterton to build a grand residence. Completed in 1742, it hosted influential figures like Cardinal Fleury, securing Britain’s prosperity. Horatio’s nephew, Horace Walpole, admired the estate. Despite a fire in 1952, subsequent restoration efforts by new owners have rejuvenated the estate, preserving its historical significance in Norfolk.
